Melanie A. Howard. For the Palm/Passion Sunday preacher, Philippians 2:5-11 might not emerge as the most immediate candidate for the basis of a sermon. Nonetheless, when held together with the Gospel account, the Christ Hymn of Philippians 2 can present a powerful theological reflection on the significance of Jesus’ work and eschewing of Barry Bandstra describes the disputation format as involving the following components: “ (1) statement of a principle or norm; (2) expressions of protest and rebuttal by the priests or people; (3) defense of the original statement; and, (4) rebuke and threat of judgment” (Bandstra, “Book of Malachi, 592). Paul’s letter to the Philippians begins by following standard Hellenistic letter-writing conventions of sender, addressee, salutation, and thanksgiving, but with distinctive glosses (in Christ, grace and peace, God our Father, Lord Jesus Christ). Paul, as is his custom, uses his Greek name Paulos rather than his Hebrew name Sha’ul.
Thus in Romans 8:29; Galatians 4:19; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Philippians 2:10, μορφή (or its derivatives) is used of the deep inner change of heart, the change which is described in Holy Scripture as a new creation; while σχῆμα is used of the changeful fashion of the world and agreement with it (1 Corinthians 7:31; Romans 12:2).
